Isn't a doula the same thing as a midwife?
No, not exactly.
What is the role of a labor doula?
Think of your labor doula as your birth coach.
She's there to support the mother and give her the affirmation and comfort she needs as her labor progresses. Labor doulas don't deliver the baby, they facilitate the experience of birth and allow the mother to focus on the task at hand. A labor doula fulfills a family's birth plan and ensures that they're getting the medical treatment they want and don't feel pressured or judged in the process. A labor doula is there to provide the additional compassionate support to reassure parents during their baby's delivery.
Is a midwife like a postpartum doula?
The postpartum doula experience is a unique one, and doesn't focus on the medical supervision of the newborn in the way a midwife does. A postpartum doula nurtures the entire family as they transition home with a new baby. They assist with newborn care, sibling care, encourages the self care and recovery process of the mother and helps keep the household on track.
A postpartum doula is the strong force that keeps a family from skipping a beat as they adjust to the new schedule and routine of bringing home baby. Doulas are there to help train new parents, answer questions they have and provide a helping hand with everyone in the family. A typical shift could include meal prep, feeding and bathing baby while the new mother rests or self cares, getting siblings settled down when they get home from school or helping parents with some light chores around the house. The doula's primary goal at hand is to focus on eliminating stress for the entire family. And we're pretty amazing at what we do best!
The Extra Connection
Midwives play an important role in the delivery and medical care of new babies, while doulas strive to improve the emotional and physical wellbeing of new parents while their little one is born. They provide a link that encourages the communication between partners and between parents and medical staff.
