Congratulations! You have created a tiny minion.
You and your partner have been preparing for the past few months for the grand entrance of your own tiny spawn. It’s probably been a little weird to you, you don’t get to feel all the small flutters your partner did in the first trimester and you don’t feel them growing within your body. You did hold back her hair as she hugged the toilet again and got up and get her Chinese food at 3 am, though.
(She needed it RIGHT THEN, I know.)
It’s an entirely different world for you than for her. I see it in your face, you just want her and your baby safe. They are your world and you will do anything for them. What you don’t want is for anyone to take that special place. You feel like you have so little control in this science experiment you started. How could a doula help in a way you can’t?
Let me tell you a secret- a doula doesn’t do anything you can do; she cannot do what you can.
You and your partner got here together. You've already been through so much and you're probably even closer now than ever. I cannot and do not want to get between you. Don't forget- you're her world, too.
Let me tell you another secret- a doula is there for you just as much as your birthing partner.
You need support too. It’s just as important for you to have someone to give you pat on the shoulder, or remind you to eat or drink, or be with her while you go to the bathroom while she’s swaying through contractions. A doula is there when she says her back hurts and you can’t remember exactly what the blasted childbirth educator said to do.
“Do you remember how to do a double hip squeeze? Awesome. You work on that and I’ll heat up the rice bag.”
Your doula is a companion. You and your partner are the heroes in this tale. You just be there for her, and I’ll be there for you. You’re not alone. Together, we’ve got this.
Oh hey, it's your turn to roll.
