Postpartum- [pohst-pahr-tuh m]
1. of or noting the period of time following childbirth; after delivery.
The word "postpartum" is often considered synonymous with "postpartum depression".
In the United States, mental health issues are considered taboo. Unfortunately, this means that parents aren't talking about the period after childbirth enough. The postpartum period after childbirth is much more than a parent's state of mind. The postpartum period is sleepless nights, cluster feeding, diaper blowouts, spit up, tears- from babies and parents, and yes, even mental health issues such as postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum psychosis, and the "baby blues".
What is #ThisIsMyPostpartumStory?
#ThisIsMyPostpartumStory is an initiative to show a real face on the postpartum period through social media. On this blog and our social media accounts, along with our other stories on parenting, we will be featuring parents just like you. All kinds of parents- mothers, fathers, papas, mama, whatever you like to be called, will have their stories shared here.
What kind of stories are you looking for?
We're looking for stories about your first trip to the store with baby, how breastfeeding is different for this baby compared to last time, what it's like to be a first-time parent, and anything else you can come up with.
Do I have to have given birth or be a mom to be featured?
Absolutely not. We happily accept stories from adoptive parents, fathers, trans-mothers, trans-fathers, and even grandparents. At the Birth Geek we leave no one out and we celebrate your families, whoever they're made up of!
